Fishers of Men Kit

Missionary work is the lifeblood of the Church and the lifesaving blessing to all who accept its message. When the Master ministered among men, He called fisherman at Galilee to leave their nets and follow Him, declaring, “I will make you fishers of men.” The Lord extended those calls to humble men so that through them others would hear the truths of His gospel and come unto Him.

It is that little extra effort that throws a big punch in the overall look and feel of your ‘Box’!

Gone Fishing!  Included in the MBM ‘Fishers of Men’ kit is a Box Introduction Letter – Place it in your box right before you tape it up to introduce your theme to your Missionary when they open up their box of LOVE! Don’t forget to draw and arrow on the outside of your box pointing to which end you want them to open up their box on.

Something’s Fishy!!! One thing we always included in all of our Missionary Box Mom care packages was a personalized letter to each Missionary from each Mother. Inside our letters we included our testimonies, the reason we chose that particular item to include in the box, along with uplifting messages filled with love. A lot of the items won’t make much sense as to why you are including them in the box unless you explain how it specifically applies to your Missionary and to Missionary Work. Many times over we have received thank you letter from our Missionaries – but the things they thanked us all for the most was the letters we included. It’s just a little piece of ‘Home’ in a box! So don’t forget to write!

We included the following letter to our Missionary: (Feel free to cut and paste and use for your own Missionary letter.)

Dear Missionary,

So I’m sure you can probably easily figure out that this Care Package might have something to do with FISH! Hahahahaha! It has been so fun for us all to put it together for you and I really appreciated studying more about ‘Fishers of Men’. Missionary work is the lifeblood of the Church and the lifesaving blessing to all who accept its message. When the Master ministered among men, He called fisherman at Galilee to leave their nets and follow Him, declaring, “I will make you fishers of me.” The Lord extended those calls to humble men so that through them others would hear the truths of His gospel and come unto Him.

Truly, when Jesus taught His disciples how to be ‘Fishers of Men’ by teaching them how to actually fish… He was using an object lesson that you can use today as a missionary.

Matthew 28:18-20
18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations , baptizing them in the name of the Father , and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Anyone who claims discipleship cannot help but have a special appreciation for the calling of the first apostles and for their authority.

And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. [Matthew 4:18–22]

Jesus had a lot to teach these men. Think about what they might have been thinking when Jesus told them to leave their nets behind so He could teach them how to fish for people. These men followed him “at once,” though, which leads us to believe they trusted this man, Jesus…and maybe they were hoping for something that would give them more purpose, something more lasting and meaningful. Nonetheless, they followed…obeyed. You are currently serving a mission so you too are following Jesus’ example by being Fishers of Men.

Here are 7 unexpected “fishing” comparisons that will help you to teach people to lead others to Christ:

1. Get Outside Your Comfort Zone.
Fishing can push you outside of your comfort zone, but once you get out there, you get used to it. Most people like their sleep, especially since they don’t always get enough of it. But the optimal times to fish are at dawn and dusk. So, setting your alarm to get up at 4:30 am, getting your clothes on and heading out into the cold first thing in the morning is, well…uncomfortable. Witnessing to others can also be very uncomfortable at first, but when we make a habit of living out our faith in front of others, it becomes normal and natural for us. And eventually, living any other way becomes unsettling to our spirits and goes against everything we know to be right and true.

2. Be Prepared and Assemble the Right Gear.
Fishing requires the right gear. In order to do it right, you’ll need a good pole, a net, a tackle box filled with all kinds of hooks and lures, sinkers and bobbers, and of course, fishing line. There’s a lot of gear one could stock up on depending on the kind of fishing you want to do. To be a fisher of men, you need to be well equipped, too. However, there’s really only three things you’ll need…a love for and willingness to follow Jesus, your scriptures, and a teachable spirit. These three things will take you far on your journey toward making disciples of all nations.

3. Choose the Correct Bait.
When fishing, you need to know what kind of bait you’re going to need. According to posted fishing rules, not all lakes and rivers are created equally. You have to know what bait is allowed where and what is not. Like people, it’s a good idea to be familiar with your surroundings, to know what kind of hearts you’ll be ministering to, and to seek God first in how best to love them well.

4. Cultivate Patience.
Fishing requires much patience. Standing on the shore of a lake for hours without ever getting a bite can be very frustrating. Some days you never catch a thing, but then there comes along a day of fishing when everything just falls into place and you finally reel one in. The same is true of witnessing to others. You want so badly for them to see the Truth, to finally say yes to the gospel of Jesus Christ – that when they don’t…it’s heartbreaking. But we must keep believing, keep trying, and continue looking for open doors to minister and live our faith openly and authentically.

Luke 5:4-6
4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake .

5. Keep on Fishing.
At some point your line will get caught on something, sometimes often, and will break or get tangled. As we open our hearts and share our testimonies with others, our very real enemy will work hard to throw roadblocks in our way. His goal is to make us trip over a snare he’s strategically placed to cause those to whom we witness to never hear the message of Jesus or see Him in our lives. As with fishing, when this happens, we have to either untangle the line or cut it off and keep on fishing. Satan does not get to win! We already know God does powerful things through brokenness.

6. Have Faith.
Each time we go out fishing, we express our faith and trust in God through prayer as a family while we’re driving to our destination. We ask for His blessing on our day, for His protection, guidance, and yes…we even ask Him for the big catch. But we also thank Him in advance for the amazing opportunity to get to go out and fish together. We know that even when that catch doesn’t happen, there’s another day, another fish, another opportunity right around the corner. When leading others – we need to remember that God’s desire is for all people to believe.

Philippians 2:10-11
10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord , to the glory of God the Father.

7. Enjoy the Opportunity to Fish.
While you fish, think about who the best fisherman ever in the history of the world was. You have the opportunity to tell people about the greatest Fisherman that has ever lived. Think of how perfectly God’s Truth is woven through His Story in the scriptures and how relevant those Truths still are today. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow…always a Fisherman teaching us how to fish.

We appreciate your Missionary service. Thank you for being willing to go and do and serve and Fish. Keep Fishing!

Much Love to You and Your Companion,

2. Make Your Own Fish-In-A Bag Soaps

What you’ll need:
* Block of clear Melt-n-Pour glycerin soap. We found a 2 lb. block at ,Jo-Ann Stores for about $10 (but you can use your 40% off coupon on it!) Or buy in bulk at Elements Bath & Body Company. (2lbs. approx. $6.99)
* Plastic fish. We found some at Elements and at Oriental Trading Co.
* Microwaveable plastic bowl. Ours has a pour spout on it which helped a ton.
* Large kitchen knife.
* Funnel.
* Wooden skewers or chopsticks.
* Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
* Plastic bags.
Okay, let’s get started!
1. Cut off a chunk of your glycerin block. Ours was about 3 inches.
2. Cut that block into smaller pieces. We cut ours into thirds.
3. Place blocks in a microwaveable plastic bowl. In this bowl we did about three batches, but we recommend you start with one batch your first time.
4. Prepare an ice-water bath in a bowl. (Just Ice Cubes in a Bowl.)
5. Microwave the soap until it melts (about 45 seconds for a small batch). Make sure all the blocks are melted. If not, stir and put it back in the microwave for 20-30 seconds more.
6. Using a funnel, carefully pour the soap into a plastic bag. The funnel helps the soap run straight down to the bottom and not all over the sides of your bag. If it gets on the sides, it hardens that way and doesn’t look realistic when you’re done. Fill it about 1/4 to 1/3 full so the soap will end up being a good size for little hands to hold.
7. The soap will be full of little bubbles at this point, so quickly spray it with the alcohol. That will take care of them.
8. Take your bag to the ice bath and hold it in the ice water for a moment. Using your skewers like chopsticks, grab a fish and lower it into the soap, keeping it upright and somewhat in the middle. Once the soap has started to harden a little and the fish isn’t moving around in it anymore, you can remove it from the ice bath and leave it upright to harden completely.
9. Tie the bag closed with a cute ribbon or even a twist tie and you’re done!

3. Howard Lyon ‘From Fear to Faith’ 4X6 or 5X7 Postcard
Frame either a 4X6 or a 5X7 size copy of ‘From Fear to Faith’ by artist Howard Lyon. Include a copy of the interview by Candela Rice. We used a simply frame from the Dollar Tree Store.

Howard Lyon
APRIL 2014 – INTERVIEW BY CANDELA RICE –

Howard Lyon was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. He is the youngest of five children. Howard had very supportive parents who, even when he was very young, made sure he had the materials and education to hone his talents. While attending high school, Howard met his wife, Shari Lunt. After they graduated, Howard served a mission and then they married and went to BYU and started their family. He began his career studying illustration at Brigham Young University working with artists such as Robert Barrett, Don Seegmiller, James Christensen, and Greg Olsen. Over the past twenty years he has worked in the video game industry as an art director, concept artist, and freelance illustrator. For much of his career he has painted dragons and trolls or scenes from science fiction. His work can be found in products from Dungeons and Dragons books, World of Warcraft cards, Magic: the Gathering and Star Wars. He has studied art in Italy, France, and most recently at the Grand Central Academy in New York. He has recently combined these experiences to switch gears and expand his subject matter to create inspirational pieces in the style of some of his favorite old masters: William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and John William Waterhouse.

Here he discusses his painting:
Will you share your thoughts about your painting ‘From Fear to Faith’?
“It was an important piece, very personal in some ways. The disciple on the left-hand side of the boat is bailing out water. He is focused on the storm in the distance. He sits in darkness and can’t see Christ. He is so busy working to save himself that he doesn’t notice the Savior or turn to him. His actions are dictated by fear.
The next two disciples are gathering in the rigging and trying to right the mast. One pulls ropes in from the water and the other leans back, both still trusting in their own strength, not wanting to let go and approach Christ.
The disciple behind the mast has just let go of the cross bar. He has done everything he can, and is now turning towards Christ. Faith is guiding his actions now.

The next three disciples sit in the boat, turned towards Christ. They have the faith to do this but haven’t approached him yet. A little hesitant, but for the most part, their faith has pushed their fears away. The two that sit together, one with his arm around the other, represent the idea that sometimes we need put our arm around our brother, or know that it is okay to lean on another for a time.
The last disciple, Peter, is at the front of the boat. He had the faith, in the middle of the trial, to kneel at Christ’s feet and ask to be saved. At that point, he heard and felt the great words, “Peace, be still.” In the middle of the trial, his faith was whole and he knew that he could turn to Christ for salvation.”

Create your own Candy Tackle Box. We purchased a plastic organizer box with 8 compartments. You can find these boxes in lots of places and depending on the store you purchase them at they can be called a Bead Organizer or a Fishing Tackle box. We found them to be less expensive in the Fishing section of our local CAL Ranch store. ($2) You can purchase whichever size you like – but the one we used was approx. 7X4.5X2. Include a different ‘Bait’ inside each compartment.

Create your own version of ‘Fish & Chips’! We purchased some small Blue Tote Bags at the Dollar Tree Store (3-Pack) and added in a small Pringles Potato Chips (Grab and Go Size – 2.36oz.), and a box of Swedish Fish. We included the MBM tag and tied on some wave ribbon.

9. Make Your Own Fish T-Shirt. This is Hilarious!

Create your own ‘Go Fish’ T-shirt by using this simple fish-print technique to make a one-of-a-kind T-shirt that’s perfect for your Missionary!

You can make this a few different ways. Our mom Angie really went All-In and used an actual Tilapia Fish that she purchased at the grocery store. She mentioned that it is easier to get a good imprint if the fish still has its guts inside – but either way works. I seriously can’t believe she did this! Ha!

Put your choice of Fabric Paint colors all over your fish or just use one color. We used Speedball Fabric Paint. Then carefully place your choice of t-shirt over the painted fish and carefully press down. Do not move the shirt around once you have placed it over the fish or it will smear. Then carefully peel back the t-shirt from the fish. Set the fabric paint according to the manufacturer’s directions on the bottle.

Or, purchase a Fish Replica from the Acorn Naturalist and do the same as above.

10. Gone Fishing for the Lord

Create your own ‘Gone Fishing’ Gift Bag. We used a combination of Fish Candy Fun Packs, Little Fisherman Party Favor Boxes, and filled them up with Fish Candy. These items can be found on Amazon or Oriental Trading Co.

Since You’ve Gone Fishin’ for the Lord…

Here are a few tips to help you do your best:

Be Honest

Listen to the Holy Ghost

11. As you stay Tie’d Up in Missionary Work…

12. Jesus’ Disciples Game

Include a copy of Betty Devries and Mary Currier’s Jesus’ Disciples Game along with a Fish Shaped Ring Sucker.

13. Fisherman Faith – Helping to ‘Swell and Enlarge’ the Soul…

Include a copy of Alma 32:28 along with some Colored Growing Fish.

Alma 32:28
Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true see, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts;…

And when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves – It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

14. Cast Your Nets Aside –
Tie up in a mini fisherman’s net a ‘Cast Aside’ gift package. Include a copy of Matthew 4:18-22 along with a ‘Net’ full of goodies. (Happy Socks w/Sharks, a package of Blue Shark gummie candies, and a package of Mini Fish Inflatables.)

Matthew 4:18-22
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

I love the depth, yet simplicity of these scriptures! This applies to you now, probably more than it ever will in your life.

Think of all of the “nets” you can cast aside to serve your mission… phones, friends, school, cars, family vacations, jobs, etc. The list goes on! What a wonderful sacrifice.

I believe there are more “nets” we can cast aside… even when we feel like we have cast aside all that we can. I challenge you to find any nets you might be carrying… straightway!

Some nets I think we all struggle casting aside are… idleness, extra sleep, daydreaming, fear, and pride.

Focus on how to cast any nets you might have! Give 100% of yourself to the Lord, and be true Fishers of Men! What a wonderful opportunity you have while you’re on your mission without everyday distractions. Pray more intently, listen better, see others through Christ’s eyes. Talk to everyone, don’t let any teaching opportunity pass you by! Teach and care as our savior did. Become true Fishers of Men.

I love you, I pray for you and am so thrilled for you to cast any nets aside to become a better fisher!

Object Lesson – Temptation
Objective – To Show how Satan uses temptation.
Materials Needed – Several brightly colored fishing lures.

Procedure: Show the fishing lures. Comment on how brightly colored and attractive they are. Introduce the purpose of using the lures: the bright colors, metallic shapes, and movements attract fish. The ultimate purpose of the lure is to get the fish to strike at it. Help the class understand that when the fish strikes, the barbs are set and the fish cannot release itself.
Explain that Satan also uses brightly colored, appealing lures to attract us. Discuss what kind of lures Satan might use. Be sure to identify why they would be considered a lure. Explain that the best protection we and the fish have is just to leave the lures alone.

Magnet Fishing Game Object Lesson
What you’ll need:
Posterboard
Paper Clips
String
Magnet (the round kind with a hole in the middle work best)
Wood dowel (or a stick from a tree)
How to make your kids fishing game craft:
Print and cut out the fish shapes. If you print them on cardstock they work better. We made 6 to start with, but make as many as you’d like!
Put a paper clip onto each fish.
Tie the string around one end of the wooden dowel. Knot it tightly so it stays put. Tie the other end of the string to the magnet. The stronger the magnet the less frustration your children will have to deal with.
